Vote Joki November 5, 2013.
The most important thing in the world is my family. I have been married to my wife, Kathleen, for 44 years. My daughter, Sarah, and her beautiful identical twin girls, Sabrina and Sophia.
Like you, I love Meridian. That’s why I decided to run for City Council. Like you, I want Meridian to be a great place to live and raise a family. I want to protect our CORE VALUES—rural city life and quality schools.
Both CORE VALUES are at risk!
Why? Because our city forgot our CORE VALUES. We’re in a “Growth Rush” with very little gold in it. THE RESULT: Overcrowded schools! Fast and furious traffic! A city budget with millions spent on legal fees for the new city hall!
I WILL FOCUS ON MERIDIAN’S CORE VALUES
- FACT: Our Comprehensive Plan calls for developing another 27,000 acres!
But the Plan calls for protecting schools from overcrowding, a CORE VALUE. Managing growth is city business. My focus is quality schools, one of our CORE VALUES.
Managing growth and protecting schools from overcrowding is city business. Our schools are struggling to meet the demands of big enrollment numbers, over 600 new students this year! It’s one reason, I believe, why schools started charging fees for just about everything–for registration, for course enrollment, for participation in activities. I filed a lawsuit against the State Legislature for its failure to properly fund schools and against local districts for charging unconstitutional fees (the Idaho Constitution calls for a ‘free’ public education. Please see Joki v State, at this website).
Here’s the interview I did with KIVI TV 2 news anchor Michelle Edmonds, “On Your Side” show–
- FACT: The city budget increased capital spending, doubled the Mayor’s office, and paid millions in legal fees for the city hall.
But parks and recreation will take cuts, hurting yet another CORE VALUE. The next park is going to the dogs! Yes, the Park Department wants another limited use dog park.
The real priority should be Community Use Parks, the high quality, multiple purpose parks like Heroes and Settlers.
I WILL FOCUS ON MULTIPLE PURPOSE COMMUNITY PARKS
- FACT: The Budget is $80 million. Police and Fire take almost 70% of the budget.
But there’s no citizen advisory commission for Public Safety! We have commissions for Arts, Impact Fees, Zoning because, as the Mayor states, citizen advisory commissions are essential for government. It’s common sense that we should have a Public Safety Commission.
I WILL SUPPORT A PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION.
